American Birkebeiner® Announces T-Shirt Design Contest 

The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation (ABSF) is announcing a contest to design the official t-shirt for the 2010 American Birkebeiner ski race. The winning t-shirt design will be the featured retail t-shirt for the event. 

“We have created the t-shirt design contest for the 2010 event as a way to allow artists and those who love the Birkie a creative way to participate in the event,” said Ned Zuelsdorff, Executive Director of the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation. “Proceeds from the sales of the 2010 featured t-shirt will benefit young skier programs. We hope that people will consider supporting the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation and our effort to foster youth skiing by entering the contest.”

American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation Membership Reminders

If you have not renewed your Membership to the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation, now is the time. Anyone interested in voting for the Board of Directors by absentee ballot or at the Annual Meeting must renew or become a member by July 9, 2009.

Anyone who is interested in running for the Board of Directors must turn in a completed Nomination Endorsement Form and Candidate Profile by July 9, 2009.



*Foundation members will receive ballots and candidate profiles approximately 30 days before the Annual Meeting and may vote by mail or drop their ballots off at the Birkie office in Hayward. These ballots must be received at the Birkie office by 4:00 p.m. Friday, August 7, 2009.

Nordic Walking Clinic Held on Birkie Trail

On Saturday, June 20th, 34 people enjoyed a beautiful day on the Birkie Trail learning the basics of Nordic Walking.

A special thank you goes out to Linda Lemke and Julie Turnbull of Hoigaard's(pictured together in bottom picture) who presented the clinic thanks to the support of the Ski and Tea.






Linda explained the numerous benefits of Nordic Walking including:

• increased stability and balance
• improved bone density
• 20-40% increase in caloric burn over fitness walking
• easier on your joints
• heart rate increase of 10-12 beats/minute faster than fitness walking
• great for posture
• improves core muscle strength
• engages 90% of your muscles including core muscles, shoulders, back and even hand muscles
